Soroptimist International of Camarillo

Welcome

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF WOMEN & GIRLS LOCALLY AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

Soroptimist International of Camarillo is a not-for-profit 501c3 service organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls. Through local fundraising projects, Soroptimist of Camarillo is able to reach out and directly help women in Camarillo and on a broader international scale. Soroptimist International of Camarillo works independently on local programs such as the Amy Durst McAvoy Scholarship, the Camarillo Library, and our newest program "Reach for Your Dreams".

The Camarillo club belongs to a local region called the Camino Real Region. This group of Soroptimist clubs includes clubs from Lompoc to Long Beach and from Oxnard to Pasadena. The Camino Real Region supports local clubs to promote our core mission of improving the status of women. Together clubs learn and grow, each year honoring women from the Southland with the Woman Making a Difference For Women Award, the Woman's Opportunity Award, and the Violet Richardson Award.

The Camino Real Region is part of a larger federation called Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA). SIA's headquarters is in Philadelphia, PA. The Federation is comprised of Pacific Rim Countries including; Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Guam, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, United States of America, and Venezuela. This dynamic federation meets at convention biannually to conduct business, trade ideas, and make new friends. Soroptimist International of the Americas also recognizes our signature projects and recognizes Women Making a Difference, Violet Richarson, and Women's Opportunity Award Winners.

Finally, Soroptimist International of the Americas is one of four federations that comprise Soroptimist International. Soroptimist International is exclusively devoted to improving the status of women globally and can be found advising the United Nations, establishing programs to raise awareness of basic human rights, and motivating and organizing its four federations. Soroptimist International's four federations convene once every four years in the spirit of global service, friendship, education, and respect.

Local Members

United through advocacy on behalf of women's rights, status, and health, Camarillo residents have maintained Soroptimist International of Camarillo's role in the global organization of Soroptimist since 1980. Through fundraising and service projects, SI of Camarillo's members have developed life long friendships, gained confidence, leadership skills, and knowledge all while improving the lives of women and girls. Members of Soroptimist International of Camarillo represent business owners, students, bankers, health care professionals, retirees, military contractors, flight attendants, real estate agents, ranchers, mortgage brokers, travel agents, and educators.

Membership in Soroptimist is a rewarding experience. An average member attends two to four meetings a month. But, there is no requirement of attendance. Members may attend only occasionally, or may visit every meeting. A member's involvement is what she chooses it to be. As a very important note, membership is NOT limited to women. Men, may also work on the behalf of women's issues. Soroptimist International of Camarillo is always eager to welcome those interested in membership to a meeting or function. If you are looking for a way to make a difference locally or globally, give us a try. We offer two levels of membership, both a full member and a friendship level membership. See the membership page for detailed information.

Award Programs The true core of our local, regional, and federation programs are our awards. The Violet Richardson Award, recognizing a young woman, Women's Opportunity Award, helping a female head of household, and the Making a Difference for Women Award, honoring a woman dedicated to the status and position of women and related issues, truly define our organization.

Amy Durst McAvoy Scholarship: Developed to honor one of our cherished members, the Amy Durst McAvoy Scholarship rewards a woman enrolled at the California State University at Channel Islands who is enrolled as a math or science major. Amy Durst McAvoy was a talented architect whose work in Soroptimist left a lasting impression and whose friendship and kindness will not be forgotten.

Art 4 Heart: This new fundraiser and service project is a joint venture between Soroptimist International of Camarillo and Oxnard to directly benefit St. John's Regional Medical Center and Pleasant Valley Hospital. This wine and art event has specifically designed to raise funds and awareness for women's heart health.

Enchiladas: There is nothing new about Soroptimist of Camarillo and enchiladas. We have been making the CIty's best enchiladas for years. Pre-order sales are being accepted now and orders may be picked up this year at the Banquet Facility/Spiritual Living Center (340 Mobil Avenue) on Saturday November 4, 2006 between 10:00am and Noon. We only plan on rolling 600 Dozen this year so, reserve yours now!

Color Me Pink & Purple: As part of a region wide appeal, Soroptimist International of Camarillo has requested and will be granted a proclamation from the City of Camarillo. The purpose of which is to raise awareness and interest in breast caner and domestic violence issues. Soroptimist of Camarillo will join all of the other clubs in the Camino Real Region as we show up in council chambers promoting our causes and accepting recognition. Please join us on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 in the City Council Chamber and become a part of this important movement.

Live Your Dream: Some of us are living our dream and some of us are reaching for a dream. And, some of us are afraid to dream. But we all have them, a desire to become or achieve something extraordinary. Soroptimist International has launched a new program called "Live Your Dream" hoping to unite women from all different socioeconomic backgrounds, cultures, and histories. We all can dream, let's encourage one another to do so!
